Fun Stuff About Horses & Funny Horse Pictures
I'll be the first to admit... I'm not much of a horse person.
Not because I don't like horses, but just because I wasn't raised around horses and there's so much I don't understand about horses.
Still, certain "horse things" are intriguing to me. Some of them, I share below.
Perhaps others who have been as deprived as me in their interaction with horses will appreciate the following...
To give you some idea of just how clueless I am when it comes to horses:
1. Up until recently I didn't know why they put masks (I call them "blinders", but I think they're called "blinkers") over a horse's eyes whenever the horse is just minding its own business in the field.
I thought maybe it was to prevent nervous horses from getting distressed when they'd see people or cars pass by.
I have since learned that the head covering that most horses wear outdoors is usually to prevent disease and/or sickness from flies, mosquitoes (like West Nile Virus) and other insects. And yes, bird flu and other equine illnesses do travel via insects. And, yes, horses can see through through blinkers just fine. (I did not know this.I thought their purpose was to prevent the horse from seeing things.)

2. Along these lines... did you know that those little birdhouses and boxes that you see scattered intermittently along the fences of large farms are actually mosquito traps?!
Yep, they're used to help prevent the spread of disease and illness from insects to farm animals.
...And I just thought farmers were bird lovers!

The average lifespan of a horse is around 20-25 years.
Horses at grass spend around 11-13 hours a day grazing.
Yes, horses can swim. Many really enjoy the water!
A horse's hoof is always growing, just like your fingernails, so shoes need to be re-fitted regularly.
Horses generally sleep standing up, but spend some time lying down if they feel safe enough.

To this day, I can remember precisely what I was wearing, what car we drove to get there, and all the smells that were new to me on the one occasion I did try horseback riding -- in 2nd grade. My friend (Courtney Causey) and her family had some horses, but that single ride was my first and last encounter with a horse.As many of you know... I'm more of a dog lover than a horse lover, per se. Here's my favorite dog picture that pertains to horses:
Oddly enough, however, we are considering incorporating horseshoes into our new log home -- as door knobs, cabinet door pulls, and drawer handles. (We got this idea from fellow log homeowners, Lonnie & Sherry.)

i love horses but i don't have one
i have tons of animals especialy horses.i've grown up around horses and love them.we recently had a baby born his name is mic jagger.
Hey, im 13 to and last year I bought my very first horse. I have always wanted one. Im obbsessed. Yes, The masks are not similar to blinkers. My horse doesnt use that, he's such a mutt. He prefers his trusty tail and 4 other pasture compainions. My aunts horses and dogs to not agree. She has sheep herders, and a bad tempered mare. SO, they are kept seperate. Nice article. Get into horses! They rock!
hi i am 13 and have recently brought on a 7 year old pony from bucking. he absaloutly loves fly veils, please don't mistake them for blinkers, they are sooooo different! blinkers are the little square thingd, you put over their eyes when they are carrige pulling. they are to stop them shying at other vehicles or people!i now have five rossetts for showjumping on my pony and he has got a lot better. (he looks sooper kool in travel boots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I love horses so much!Only the sad part is I have none.:(. The only good thing is my uncle has three horses im learning to ride each.I also need to brush and feed them some times but I don't mind. Sometimes I dream of being a champ at horse riding,millions of trophies in a glass show case but I know its never going to happen oh well.Talk to yall later!Uncles calling.

yeh the thing the horse is wearing with the eyes on it is called a fly veil, blinkers are totally different =)

Im 12 and I have an 8 year old quarter horse. His name is Skip. I have actually started barrel racing with him and will start to do the odd rodeo and jackpot with him. i also hope to get into the rodeo circuit when out of school.
Masks and blinkers are not the same thing. Blinkers are usually used by horses pulling a carriage, or racehorses, and they can't see through them. It's to help keep them from spooking at objects or other horses coming up beside them.

I lurrrv horses I have 1 called Lulu (Algarth hoity toity!!) they are so beautiful and care alot about each other. They are truly amazin creatures!!! Mine can jump 3ft even though shes only 11.3hh!!!! OMG!!!

Your pics r so FUNNY. I used to have a horse but then we had to give it away because it got to much to handel. I wish I had some funny pics like that. I know I would send pics everyday to my friends. If only I ad horses. I love horses so much that everything I write is about horses. Horses r the BEST anmal and thing in the world atleast thats what I think. As a horse lover, it's hard for me it imagine anyone not loving horses. I know in my head that there are those folks out there who know nothing about them but my heart thinks that's just wrong! So I hope you can get to know them better in the future. BTW that thing on their faces is called a "fly mask." and I love the one with the painted on eyes!! I think you could make a killing marketing thhose!
