Mosquito Ringtone: Parents & Teachers Can't Hear It, But Teens Can
If you want to see if you can hear the Mosquito Ringtone that only 20-somethings are supposed to be able to hear, try it for yourself here...
This one-of-a-kind new ringtone that I'm not supposed to be able to hear (because I'm "over 20") actually hurt my ears.
...I guess that means I heard it alright!
Then again, it only hurt my left ear. (Ha, I've always thought that my left side was my more "youthful" side... now it's been confirmed!)
Anyhoo...
A condition called presbycusis, or ageing ear, means that by the time most people reach the age of 25, they cannot hear much above a frequency of 13 or 14 kilohertz. Source
First The Facts:
Teenagers everywhere are downloading this all-new ringtone (known as "the mosquito ringtone", "teen buzz", "mosquitone") and using it to fool their parents and teachers into thinking their cellphone isn't ringing and/or they aren't text messaging their friends.Since adults lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds, the teens are using this high-pitched ringtone to their advantage by setting their cellphones to ring this tone whenever they have an incoming call or text message. It's a way for their mobile phone to ring without adults knowing it.
The Mosquito Ringtone first arrived in classrooms earlier this year when a Scandinavian teenager, inspired by the Mosquito alarm, developed a high-frequency sound into a ringtone. The "Teen Buzz" is said to have spread to the UK and America via the Internet. Source
Q: What was the original Mosquito alarm all about?
A: It was a high-pitched sound machine marketed to help store owners in England to keep teenagers from loitering outside their shops!
Q: Why don't teens just set their phones to "vibrate"?
A: Because you can actually "hear" a cellphone vibrating these days. Not only do they vibrate, but cell phones also tend to hum at the same time -- a dead giveaway to someone trying to talk or text message without being noticed.
Q: How are they getting this ringtone?
A: Known as "Teen Buzz," it is spread from phone to phone via text message and Bluetooth technology. (Source)
Listen To "Teen Buzz" & Other Ultrasonic Ringtones
Truth be told, because of the lower sound quality that results from MP3 formats, most people will be able to hear the MP3 version of the Mosquito Ringtone. Before you try this yourself, realize that my (left) ear is still ringing! ...and it gave me a terrible headache.
Listen to the Mosquito Ringtone in MP3 format now.
On the other hand, the WAV file is a much higher quality audio file, and and a result, it is less likely to be heard by adults:
(I am unable to hear this version.)
Listen to the Mosquito Ringtone in WAV format now.
It's probably no surpise -- since dogs can hear much higher pitched sounds than humans can -- that both of my dogs reacted to the MP3 and WAV sounds above. The funny part: Only the younger one (7 months old) acted confused and irritated by the sound. The older one (3 years old) raised his ears a bit, but otherwise remained on the floor, calm and content. (But then again, he is 21-- in dog years!)
If you'd like to know exactly which freqencies your ears can hear, have a listen to these ultrasonic ringtones which range from 8kHz to 21.1kHz.
If you're over 20, the ringtones in the 17 to 21 kHz range will most likely to be inaudible to your ears.
...Oh, by the way, my (left) ear is still ringing!

hey i'm only 13 and i can hear all pf them exept like the last 2 thats it
How the heck do you get this on virgin mobile phones?
If you are still young and you can't hear it anymore I'd suggest you start wearing earplugs when you go out dancing (or find yourself in a loud environment) to avoid futher damage.
If you still can hear the sound I'd suggest you start wearing earplugs when you go out dancing to keep your ears from aging early.
I'm 32 and I can hear up to 18kHz (when I put it loud enough) but I was usually carefull of my ears, perhaps the 40 year old scientists sofWar (a few comments below) didn't have the social life that involved disco's or dancings ... anyway as a scientist he should know better. Most of my 30+ co-workers can't hear above 15kHz
(earplugs in a dancing: it's not like you won't hear the music anymore ... )
i am 13 and i heard about this and i looked it up, and i dont know how far up i can hear it, but all besides 2 of them, i can hear. yes it has left a buzzing/ringing/hurting sensation in my ears. first it was my left and now it's my right. but my little brother can't hear the lowest one i can, and he's 10; and my dad is 46 and he can't hear about half of what i can. so the answer to a question of "are my ears aging older than usual age?" no! this is a fake. they are high pitched buzzes. im in all the highest classes there are to be in, for an 8th grader; and what i have to say is, if you can see across a high-way of a jack in the box sign, you can definitely hear the loudest buzz there is. your ears are not aging earlier than they're supposed to.
Ok, if it's such "fraud" why is it that I (being 17 years old) could hear it perfectly, but my parents couldn't? If you're a scientist like you say you are, I'm sure you'd be smart enough to know that what happens to you isn't the same for what happens to anyone else.
im 15 n i first heard about this in my environmental class @ school
this guy downloaded the teen buzz and a lot of the kids in my class(their age ranging from 15-18) could hear it n apparently it was very irritating judging from the reaction of my classmates
me n this other guy sitting near me could not n of course neither did our teacher
so i checked it out online n it depends on the site i go to... on one website i could hear it all the way up to 22(barely)-on full volume
but when i followed the link to the ultrasonic ringtones w/ the dif. pitches on it, i could barely hear the 17.4 n i could kinda hear the 19.9 one
so does this mean that my ears are aging earlier than most kids my age??
I could barely hear it, but my sleeping 3 week old baby woke up screaming!! i think it really hurt her ears! soon after it stopped she calmed down. poor thing!!
BTW, I'm almost 26. Does this mean I'm old? LOL
Wow. I'm 15 and I can only hear up to 15.8. Jeese, maybe I'm going deaf. O_O
What an absolute load of teen shit, you are being conned, I am 40 and a scientist, I can hear this sound and higher sounds than this, its not annoying except that all the rubbish you are swallowing in thinking such rubbish like this is true. Some people may have less hearing as they age, usually they are in the 60+ bracket.
The "Teen Tormentor" has just been exposed as a fraud and so is this ringtone, they just want your money...
ha i can hear all the way up to 22 :]
how do i get it on my cellphone
i am 11 and i can hear it now i dont no why..but i can hear it!!
i am 11 and i cant hear it most of the time.....but my other 11 and 12 year old friends can hear it all of the time...why???
Anyone who says they can hear the 21 is a frod!! I'm hyper senseitive, so don't even try to fool me. I can barely hear the 19 and all the docs say i can hear, taste, smell, and notice things 37% better than the average human, so don't even try to impress anyone cuz it won't work!!
I have a razor with alltel and if some one could email me with instructions of how to get it on my phone that would be great. Its countrygurl_2167@yahoo.com. Thankx
if ur parents think that you're foolin them, try using a PDA and record the sound and play it again. the sound will be easily heard through the speakers
i really think this is awsome but i dont know how to get it on my phone! and it does make my ears hurt...will it make ur hearing worse since it is so painful to listen to alot?

I'm 12, and I could hear the 21KHz easily. My dad could easily here the MP3 version, but couldnt here a thing for the WAV version.
heyy i'm 15 and i can barely hear it. my friends say it's a really high pitch sound that annoys your ears but i all i can hear is a very low high pitch sound and it doesn't annoy me at all. Is there a problem with my ears?
I'm 19 and I could hear all but 22.4kHz, same as my 14y-o brother...
My Dad (61y-o) could hear from 8 to 18.8kHz, and my Mom (53y-o) could only hear 8kHz, 18.8kHz, 19.8kHz and 21.1kHz, but not the ones between 8 and 18.

hey could someone tell me how to get it onto my cell phone? its soo cool i totally need it =P
ow that ultra thing gave me a flippin headache, and i can listen to em all but the last 1 and im 13
I'm 31 years old and can here every one except the last one (22.4kHz). And I am absolutely sure that there is no sound of any frequency playing from this selection. I brought my dog upstairs with me and played every one for him and it was very obvious he could here them all. But I sat here for almost 5 minutes with all 5 speakers and subwoofer turned all the way up playing the last one (22.4kHz) over and over again and he didn't even twitch. I play a different one and he responds, go back to the last one and nothing. Whats up with that? This is GAY! Does anyone know where to find the real Mosquito Ringtone?
yo how to you get this on your cell i have a samsung a950sch if any can tell me e-mail me at weballin02@aim.co,
I think some people can hear the 21khz (the dog frequency) because the speakers they're using are not suitable for the frequency. I tried it on my computer and I couldn't hear anything past 17khz but my dog could hear the 21. I then tried it on my girlfriend's PC and we could easily hear every frequency including the 21khz. So I think you have to make sure you're using good speakers. basically, if you can hear the tone at 21khz, you're speakers aren't suitable.
is their a teen buzz or mosquito for virgin mobile?
i was able to hear all of the tones and so did my dad who is like 45ish..so guess it really wont work for me..lol
this site is soooooo awsome...i gotr my dad in the room and when i turned it on i started covering my ears and i was screamin ans my dad was like....Y R U SCREAMING AND COVERING UR EARS....it was hilarious...i could put this to good use in school...i wil make it so loud that all of the students will be covering their ears but the teachers will be like.......WTF!?!.....lol
This test was ok i heard the 17.7 one and then as i gt to the 19.9 one i could hear it but faintly what does this mean/???????? naomixxxxx
wow i couldnt hear past 21khlz thing it is so awsome and loud and annoying
I am 33, and I could hear all the way up to 21khz. I don't think the 24 file format is reproducible on the internet.
omg i'm 12 yrs old and man, this site is awesome! i love it! this is so gonna help me on my science fair project ;p !
thnx!
yo this junk is crazy!! boh of my parents couldnt hear it! im about 2 download it!! ((and my dog went crazzy And started bitting stuff...lol))

I am 40, Heather, 30, Alex 8, Zigggy and Sophi are dogs and we could all hear up to the 21.Khz, to the point it hurt. The 21 does not hurt Heather but she can hear it. I guess we are all young at heart, or mentally under 20. :-)
Wow, it's so amazing.I'll have to share this with my science teacher. A kid played it in class, and all the kids heard it. The teacher didn't. I'll tell her that. Very Cool.
im 13 and i could hear everything perfectly.
damn, its good to be little!
My dad could totally hear the mp3 one. The kids at my school have a different one and the teachers can not hear it! Its HILARIOUS!!!
Some of the mp3 sounds I can hear but my mom she is 48 years old and I am only 11 years old! I kind of like this site but my brother is 8 years old and he can hear the mp3 sounds. And his friend Conner and his sister Gabrielle she is 14 and she also can't hear this sound. So Gabrielle and I we don't like the sounds they do!!!!
Thank you!!!!!!!
This ringtone is causing trouble in my school because the teacher can't hear it. The popular kids think it's a big joke. At least 4 kids have it at my school. It gives me a headache!
i'm 18 and i could hear both the mp3 and the wav files. my mom who's 46 couldnt hear the mp3 one, she could hear a clicking but that's all. but the wav one my mom and my GRANDMA(who's 80) could hear.
k so this like didnt work beacuse like my mom like yelled at me for like having that noise on she said it was like hurting her ears...because you said parents cant hear it i had it blasting loud and like dude thats not cool i like had it on my cell and my teacher heard but she didnt no it was like a cell
At this point I'm wondering if this is a joke. I'm 36 yrs old and I can easily hear up to the 21 Hz range. Perhaps it's because I don't live in a big city and I'm not subject to a lot of environmental noise?
Um can someone e-mail me what to message in order to get this ringtone on my phone? ty...
dbdylan@myway.com

If you really want something to broke your ears. Get this from http://crys18.wen.ru/sounds/ultra.mp3
hi this thing realy worked and it pissed off people to ha ha ha i got introuble 4 doing it i realy like this thing.
im 18 and i couldnt hear anything above 15 khz
i played it to my dad he could hear it but only just but i could as clear as nefin
xXx :P
im 16 and i heard the 21.1 khz tone in both ears but it was quite difficult to hear and very faint. Although if i turned up volume it became a easier does this count? but anyway ad normal volume i could still hear it. I had audiological assessment and it reported that i have excellent hearing in high and low pitch sounds but slightly below average in middle range... which gets annoying becuase i usually have to say "huh" "what" "say again when people are talking to me, yet i hear these sounds very easily...
I'm 28, have had numerous loud car stereo systems, and worked on F-14's in the Navy. I can hear all the way up to the 14 Khz tone easily, after that, I think my speakers aren't capable of accurately reproducing the tones. All I get is a really garbled ~1500 hz tone.
