Who Has More Songs In Movies Than Van Morrison?

| Comments (2)

Maybe I just notice it more because I'm such a huge fan of Van Morrison, and own practically every CD he's ever made.

But seriously, I cannot believe how many times I've been watching a movie at the theater (or on DVD rental) and I'm always pleasantly surprised to hear that yet another Van Morrison song has made it into a popular movie.van-morrison.jpg

The cinematic qualities of Van Morrison's songs make it no surprise that he is one of the most popular choices for movie music. His compositions have graced the soundtrack of many box office hits over the years." Source

And I recently read that Van Morrison won an award "for his musical contributions to film."

Here's what I've learned about Van Morrison songs in movies...

Shawn Mullins At 3rd & Lindsley May 4, 2007

shawn-mullins-guitars.jpg One of our annual traditions is to go to 3rd & Lindsley to see Shawn Mullins each year.

He lives in the Atlanta area, but Shawn has remained loyal to his Music City, Tennessee fans. For the past several years, he and a small posse travel via RV to play a couple of sets at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville. I believe they air his concert "live" that night on Lightning 100.

Reminds me of a T-shirt I saw a guy wearing at 3rd & Lindsley on this particular night. It read: "Nashville is the new L.A." ...Which is similar to a line in Shawn's song, Lullaby: "It's kind of like Nashville with a tan."

It seems like each and every day Jim and I are always finding new reasons to love Nashville... oh but that's another story for another day.

You want to see some Shawn Mullins photos from 3rd & Lindsley... Right?

Here's a teaser...
I thought this was a sweet shot, taken before the show -- just a water bottle and Shawn's songlist for the night. The clincher was when I managed to capture Shawn leaving the stage with the necessities: cold water and a dry towel!

...Apparently Shawn's only dressing room requests are a bottle of water, a towel, a kapo, and his song list for the night.

A Review: Shawn Mullins '9th Ward Pickin' Parlor'

| Comments (0)

9th Ward Pickin' Parlor album by Shawn Mullins. Okay, I'll admit it... I was a bit confused the first time I listened to Shawn's latest CD "9th Ward Pickin' Parlor".

It's bluesy (...which is good).

It's got lots of soul (...which is great).

And it's got a LOT of incredible mandolin (...which is my favorite on this album)... especially on "Homemade Wine".

"Chris Thile of Nickel Creek lays down a tasty mandolin on Homemade Wine."

--Shawn Mullins

But it's also got some very unique sounding tunes that threw me completely for a loop.

Shawn Mullins: A Singer-Songwriter Worth Following

Shawn Mullins' Soul's Core CD A long-time favorite singer & songwriter of ours is Shawn Mullins.

Most know him for his songs "Lullaby" (many thought it was called "Rockabye") and "Shimmer", both of which were on the Soul's Core album.

9th Ward Pickin' Parlor CD by Shawn Mullins. Shawn's new record, 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor is an acoustic-based CD named for the New Orleans home studio where most of the album's acoustic tracks were cut.

Hear Shawn's take on this new album, specifically how he chose its title.

Owned by friend, songwriter, musician, and producer Mike West, "the house was located on Dauphine Street by the levee. Mike made it out of the city before Katrina, but the studio is a total loss."

Songwriters Deserve Due Respect

| Comments (5)

I long for the day that it becomes commonplace to see and hear the name of the songwriter, in addition to the singer on all music radio and video channels!

Country Music video channels -- like CMT and GAC -- currently include the name of the songwriter next to the singer for every video played. But other video channels -- like MTV and VH1 -- have yet to follow suit. And there isn't ONE radio station around that gives props to the songwriter when their song is played.

Maybe it's because I'm from Nashville and I "know" a lot of the songwriters who pen many of today's hits (mostly Country; some Pop)... but I find myself getting more and more frustrated with "the system" each time I hear a new tune on the radio, and I'm left wondering who might have written that particular song. Much to my dismay, the DJ usually zips right into another song -- OFTEN times mentioning the singer, but NEVER mentioning the writer!

Here's an eclectic listing of the concerts we've been to, our favorite singers and songwriters, and the reasons we're glad to live in Nashville - Music City USA.
