I took the plunge... I shelled out the $19.95/yr for access to Yahoo's advanced email features at the same time that I upgraded (for FREE) to Yahoo's new Mail Beta version.
I'm glad I did, on both accounts.
Here's why...
Why Yahoo Mail Plus Is Worth $19.95/yr:
I LOVE being able to check my email from ALL of my many different e-mail accounts in one place... and from any computer!Plus, I can now send email from any of those accounts as well.
There are lots of little "bonuses" that I enjoy as well, but I primarily did it for the two reasons mentioned above.
One big "plus":
There's no more annoying "timed out" issues, where you have to log into Yahoo with your password again and again. Oh, and there are no more ADS!!!
One big "minus":
There needs to be a way for Yahoo to check all of your e-mail accounts for new mail automatically -- say, every 5 minutes or so. They say it's a standard problem with POP3 email accounts in general -- there's no way to "push" email to you unless you use a standalone program like eprompter. Only, eprompter currently doesn't work with Yahoo's latest version: Yahoo mail beta. (For the record, your mail on Yahoo's primary account is automatically checked every couple of minutes, but this doesn't apply to any non-Yahoo accounts you've set up.)
Here's a great review of Yahoo's e-mail plus program.
Why Yahoo's New Mail Beta Innerface Is Great
Here are a few cool things about Yahoo's new Mail Beta program (even the FREE version) that I noticed:- The innerface is much more modern and simple. It's just like any other windows-based program now... just drag & drop, open things in tabs, etc.
- It's also got a built-in feed reeder (or aggregator) that's a cinch to use!
- The calendar ticker at the bottom of the screen is way cool for keeping upcoming appointments & reminders right in front of your eyes.
- You can even "try it" with just a click. Have a look around & experiment with a few things... then switch back to the old way if you don't like it. It's just a simple click back to the "old" Yahoo mail.
One thing I wish...
...That Yahoo would modernize its Notepad features! Yahoo Notepad is still dinosaurish in design and functionality. This doesn't stop me from using it though. I love having ALL of my personal notes and ideas categorized for me and accessible from any computer!

Here's a great review and interview with Ethan Diamond of Yahoo.

Yahoo!!! I was able to cancel my Yahoo Plus account by following these steps.
Yahoo's cancellation policy is also explained here.
Maybe that will help other people trying to decide between Yahoo vs Google web-based email programs.
Jeffrey -
Thanks so much!
I look forward to trying out the email features this weekend.
I'm mostly glad that I'll be able to receive AND send from each of my different email accounts -- through gmail. I can do this in Yahoo currently, but it's a little clunky.
Currently, I'm having a blast with all the Doc/Notepad features. This could be awhile... I currently have 514 individual notes -- each of them LOADED with data & sub-categories and organized in about 50 different "folders" -- in Yahoo Notepad.
I cannot thank you enough for turning me on to this...
sweet! i'm glad you liked the docs and spreadsheets. google implements that private default with the ability to share feature on lots of their services, like the GoogleReader, for example. I use that to read all my rss/atom feeds and love having the ability to make certain feeds public, highlight a feed on "my public page" with one click, etc etc.
i just sent u ur invite to gmail...sorry we couldn't exchange this info b4 you shelled out $20 to yahoo :*-(

I didn't realize it until now, but this is the same program that Jim's been using for sharing creating & spreadsheets. He says he's really happy with it so far.
I checked out the Google documents feature, and you're right... it seems very similar to Yahoo's notepad. Probably even better in some aspects.
So now I look forward to copying all my Yahoo notepad stuff over to Google's doc's and going from there. (I trust that all my notes will remain private unless & until I make them "public", right?)
I''ll be emailing you for the formal "invite" for gmail...
Thanks for all the great info!
UPDATE:
I found this at Google help -
"Your documents and spreadsheets are private by default. Unless you share the published or shared URL with other people, only those that you invite will see your files."
...cool!
yup, gmail gives ya all that. they don't have a notepad feature, but they've got the docs and spreadsheets that you can create and access from any computer. I've never used yahoo, so I do not know how cool the notepad is, but I would imagine that the google docs can more than measure up. check it out and let me know if you want an invite. gmail gives you ALL of that? I didn't know that they had a "notepad" feature as elaborate as Yahoo's...
I have to admit, that's the ONLY reason I use Yahoo. I can't live without those limitless notes accessible from any computer.
gmail gives ya all of that for free. they also provide tools for you to switch your email address, notify your friends, import contacts, etc--automatically. if you want to switch, i'll send you an invite (u have to be invited to gmail, to protect against spammer accounts).
