One of the few songs I truly enjoy from Mr. Chesney is one that I've had a hard time getting out of my mind since the video debuted on Nov. 25th... the song has since gone to #1.
It's called "Anything But Mine".
He didn't write it... a guy named Scooter Carusoe did.
All I can say is I dig this song so much that I hope it gives Carusoe the break he needs to become "the next big thing" in the songwriting world.
As Holly Gleason writes: "The quietly acoustic, massively yearning "Anything But Mine" is hardly the pumped-up sort of thing people expect from Kenny Chesney."
Kenny comments on Carusoe's lyrics: "This is a song I think everybody everywhere has lived... It's too long, too slow, in some ways too sad. But when you're this real -- and it's the kind of ache that reminds you how sweet life is, you just can't stop it."
Agreed. Chances are EVERYone has lived out the words of this song at least once in their lifetime. There are so many lines that "take me back"...
Thanks, Scooter Carusoe for penning such a heartfelt, real-life song!
If "Anything But Mine" reflects the caliber of ALL his songs, then I'd say Carusoe is sure to be a hit as a songwriter in this biz! ...Just you wait.
And the video does a great of bringing the words to this song to life. Check it out!
For the record, my favorite line is:
"Mary is holdin' both of her shoes in her hand... says she likes to feel the sand beneath her feet."
(It doesn't sound nearly as cool on paper, but it comes at a great spot in the song... and it's just so ME!)
There's a warm wind comin in from off of the ocean,
Makin its way past the hotel walls to fill the street.
Mary is holdin both of her shoes in her hand;
Said she likes to feel the sand beneath her feet.
And in the mornin I'm leavin,
Makin my way back to Cleveland,
So tonight, I hope that I would do just fine.
And I don't see how you could ever be anything but mine.
There's a local band playin at the seaside pavilion,
And I got just enough cash to get us in.
And as we are dancin, Mary's wrappin her arms around me,
And I can feel the sting of summer on my skin.
In the midst of the music, I tell her I love her,
And we both laugh, cuz we know it isn't true.
Ah, but Mary, there's a summer drawin to an end tonight,
And there's so much that I long to do to you.
But in the mornin I'm leavin,
Makin my way back to Cleveland,
So tonight, I hope that I would do just fine.
And I don't see how you could ever be anything but mine.
Ooooh...
And in the mornin I'm leavin,
Makin my way back to Cleveland,
So tonight, I hope that I would do just fine.
And I don't see how you could ever be anything but mine.
Mary, I don't see how you could ever be anything but mine.
Ooooh... Ooooh.
And in the morning I'm leavin,
Makin my way back to Cleveland,
So tonight, I hope that I would do just fine.
And I don't see how you could ever be anything but mine.
(Attention radio disc jockeys: Those "Oooooh's" that you always CUT OFF at the end are important and bring a classy/sentimental closure to this song. Not to mention the fact that there's a repeat of the chorus at the VERY end... so please quit cutting the song short!)

So I live in MB and this video will always be remembered as my life because the Pavilion and Magic Attic and that loved "Miracle Mile" boardwalk are no longer there. They have all been torn down and all that is left at this point is a large patch of grass and 3 solid trees where The Pavilion once stood.
This is so cool! My husband and I (boyfriend at the time) watched them film the parts at the beach. We were laying out on the beach when this camera crew and group of people come down and start filming. We had no idea what it was for and now we know!! :) I love kenny
